EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
