This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
